FLOWER PRODUCTION LEAD

Hours Per Week: 40 hrs/wk

Start/End Dates: Mid- April  through Mid-November (with part time design opportunities through mid December).

Weekly Schedule: Mondays through Thursday 7-4 (6:30-3:30 harvest days Mon. & Wed. June through August), Fridays 7-1 plus 1 Saturday morning/month. 1 hr unpaid lunch break

Compensation: Starting pay $19/hr  DOE + higher hourly rate for wedding & event design work

Job Description:

    Our Flower Production Lead is immersed in all things floral at the farm, from starting and nurturing tiny finicky seedlings to arranging bouquets for our farmers markets and wedding events. Along with Adrienne they are responsible for ensuring the farm has the consistency and abundance of blooms to meet our market demands. This job includes both independent work as well as working with and overseeing a small group of team members. While focused on flowers they will also be involved in broader team projects like prepping our no-till beds in the spring, spring transplant pushes(both flower and vegetable), fall root crop harvest and  greenhouse and high tunnel projects. This position includes:

  • Greenhouse Management: Working with Adrienne to ensure timely and accurate seeding of over 40 types of flowers, and paying attention to the details of their individual requirements. Monitoring seeding chart to ensure succession plantings are done and overseeing other team members who might be seeding in the greenhouse.
  • Field Management: Work with farm manager/owners Adrienne and Ken, to ensure plants get in the ground in a timely fashion, bed prep, fertility and water management needs are met, weeds and floral supports are monitored.
  • Harvest/ Design: Take lead on executing and overseeing our team when flower harvesting, ensuring timely and efficient harvests, and that quality standards for blooms are met. Post harvest they will be involved in arranging and packing flowers for both wholesale and retail outlets. 

Qualifications:

We are excited to be offering this new position on our farm. This is a mid-level management job that is well suited to an aspiring flower farmer who wants to get immersed in the trade before starting out on their own or an individual that sees the beauty in having reliable and rewarding farm based work without the headaches of running their own small business. At least one full season of commercial farming (vegetable or flowers) is required for this role. 

    Requirements:

  • Comes to work, on time, energized and prepared for the day with a can-do, positive attitude,  whether for a  beautiful morning harvest amongst the bees or a cold damp spring transplanting day.
  • Has good communication skills. Comfortable playing a role as a leader in the field, able to oversee the work of others, give guidance and constructive criticism. 
  • Has awareness of the need to balance both efficiency and quality of work and to anticipate needs to ensure for efficient transitions from one task to the next.Lead by example in all the work they do.
  • High level of attention to detail and proficiency in  managing lists and record keeping
  • Floral design experience or demonstrated artistic aptitude
  • Ability to work efficiently independently as well as with a small group.
  • Ability to work hard outside in a variety of weather conditions 
  • Can lift 50lb, and has the physical health and ability to work often repetitive tasks for long periods of time squatting or kneeling.
  • Valid Drivers License to operate vehicles on farm and delivery routes. 

Compensation:

Pay commensurate with experience, starting at $19/hr plus paid time off in-season. Abundant access to fresh vegetables and flowers from the farm. Employees receive 8hrs of PTO time per 200 hours worked to be used for sick time or other personal time off.

FARM CREW

New Beat Farm’s crew members are hard working, self motivated individuals , who are passionate about  organic agriculture, love to have their hands in the soil, excited to learn new things and thrive in a fun, fast  paced collaborate work environment. They help the farmers in executing the daily needs on the farm while  keeping in mind the bigger picture of the season. Our crew is involved in all aspects of the farm and will  receive in-depth training in our farm systems to give them the confidence and knowledge they need to be  valuable members of our farm family.

Regular work includes: 

  • greenhouse seedling production of field crops 
  • high tunnel production management 
  • Bed Prep in our No-Till System
  •  Planting of Vegetables & Flowers
  • Weeding 
  • Pruning 
  • Harvesting Vegetables & Flowers
  • Washing and packing produce for market 
  • Irrigation management 
  • Building and repairing farm infrastructure. 

Crew members may also be given independent work projects based their abilities, interest and farm needs  throughout the season that could include, succession seeding in the fields and greenhouses, high tunnel  management, irrigation management, and individual crop management. 

Our work varies seasonally and has weekly patterns.

Mondays and Thursdays we are mostly bustling about harvesting for our variety of markets. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays are project focused days, planting, weeding, seeding etc.  We mostly work as a crew but there will be times throughout the week when you will be asked to work efficiently and productively alone or in small groups.  There is a one hour (unpaid) lunch break in the middle of the day, where you are welcome to cook your meals in the farm house. We want our workers to enjoy the fruits of their labor and they are welcome to the abundance of second quality veggies we harvest.

Farm Schedule and Hours:

  • Work days Mondays through Thursday 7am to 4pm plus 1 Saturday morning per month, Mid-April through October.

We value balance in both our own lives and those of our crew and are committed to keeping our work hours to our scheduled time. With the exception of days when we are bringing in hay we try to make sure everyone leaves on time. We accomplish this by showing up ready to work on time, being effective, efficient workers who can prioritize tasks, know how to transition quickly from one project to the next, and enjoy the challenge of getting the job done on time.

Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience on a production vegetable farm, landscaping, or other physical outdoor work experience
  • Ability to work hard outside in a variety of weather conditions with a positive attitude
  • Can lift 50lb, and has the physical health and ability to work often times repetitive tasks for long periods of time squatting or kneeling
  • Ability to work well in groups and independently
  • Pays attention to detail, able to hold onto multiple levels of instruction
  • Goal oriented with a drive to see the job through
  • Passion about the general success of the farm
  • Ability to keep a positive, “can do” attitude throughout the season
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to take constructive criticism and interest in challenging themselves to learn new things

Compensation:
Pay commensurate with prior work experience starting at $17/hr  DOE, for full time, full season workers, plus veggies from the farm.  Applicants with strong backgrounds in vegetable or flower production, who are looking to take on roles with a higher level of responsibility can expect a higher starting pay rate.  Part time employees pay rate vary depending on experience. Employees receive 8hrs of PTO time per 200 hours worked to be used for sick time or other personal time off.
